If you are awake or lightly sedated during a nerve block, then there should be zero risk of permanent injury during the block. The most common adverse effect from a nerve block is ineffective analgesia for a variety of reasons. More serious adverse events may occur if a nerve block is performed on a patient under general anesthesia and who cannot complain of a misplaced needle or react to an injection in the wrong anatomic compartment.
