Yes, only use soft tooth brushes. Hard ones are great for scrubbing grime in the kitchen, but leave them out of the mouth.
It could if you brush too hard on your gums. You should use a soft bristle brush and brush gently.
Toothbrush abrasions are common on the enamel but uncommon on the gums unless you brush your gums too aggressively. Try rinsing with warm salt water for sore gums
