Acupuncture can be helpful but it depends upon the severity of your condition. Have you been diagnosed with hypo or hyperthyroidism? Do you have a specialist? Are you on medication for this condition? Have you had an MRI and if so, was a tumor or nodule detected on the thyroid or surrounding tissues? How well you will respond to acupuncture can depend upon these factors.
There are several approaches that can be used in cases of both hypo and hyperthyroidism, but other comorbid conditions may complicate treatment. If you are taking any medications, you may want to check and see if there are any side effects regarding the thyroid. Acupuncture cannot cure thyroid issues but check with your doctor to see if acupuncture could be helpful in your case. Good luck!
Yes it can. You also might need herbal medication prescribed by your acupuncture physician.
I have used acupuncture and herbal supplements to help resolve thyroid issues. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), we view this issue as an imbalance in energy and hormones. That’s why with mainstream medical treatment, after they prescribe thyroid medication, the patient usually reverses and will need the opposite medication after. Check with your primary to make sure you’re a good candidate for alternative therapy.

Chinese herbal medicines can treat a wide range of thyroid problems. While I do not treat endocrine disorders, many acupuncturists do.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting me.
The acupuncture can help thyroid problems, but it’s more effective when you combine with natural herbal medicine. Please contact a licensed acupuncturist near you. They can definitely help you.
When your thyroid is not functioning properly, your body can experience a variety of symptoms. Acupuncture can be used to restore hormonal balance, regulate energy levels, smooth emotions and help manage sleep, emotions and menstrual problems. There are several powerful acupuncture points on the ear and the body that can be used to regulate the production of thyroid hormones. Treatments take all of your symptoms into account and are aimed at balancing the energy within the body to optimize health.
Each case is different, but in general terms, acupuncture has proven to be effective in mitigating hormonal imbalances. Check this study: Acupuncture Stimulation and Neuroendocrine Regulation https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/B9780124115453000067
According to a 2018 research meta-analysis, acupuncture has been effectively used to help reduce thyroid disorders.

“Findings indicated reductions in patient symptoms and improvements in biomarkers where acupuncture was used”, was the conclusion analyzing 29 clinical Studies regarding this topic.

Consistency of care is key with naturally regulating any physiological disorders. Patience regarding length of treatments needed over time to balance the issue is also recommended.

Thyroid conditions are best with combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

Yes. Acupuncture can treat and alleviate the symptoms of a hyperthyroid, hypothyroid, and conditions like Hashimoto's disease.
Usually, yes. I've only seen one hyperthyroid patient and she didn't continue with treatment for me to say for certain. But theoretically, it should be able to help with hormone regulation.
Yes, it can help, it is effective to treat thyroid problems.
It depends on what kind of thyroid problem we're talking about. I've used acupuncture to successfully help manage hyper and hypo thyroid conditions where the T3/T4 values weren't hugely out of range. Sometimes when the labs are way out of range your best bet is to combine acupuncture with conventional pharmaceutical therapy.

If this is a Hashimoto's case, there are some dietary changes which must be made in order to get a handle on the autoimmune aspects. The biggest single thing a Hashimoto's patient can do to assist the treatment is eliminate wheat consumption - this ends up being a stumbling block for the majority of patients. I've gotten good results for Hashimoto's patients who were able to successfully manage their diet. Not so good results for those who couldn't.

In this type of case it's critical you make sure you're seeing a nationally board certified and state licensed acupuncturist (someone who actually attended and graduated from an accredited school of Chinese medicine). If you're not in CA, you can use the "Find a Practitioner" lookup at NCCAOM.org to find practitioners in your area.
