Pediatrics | Pediatric Allergy/Immunology Questions Coughing

Can certain foods trigger coughing?

Is it possible for certain foods to trigger a fit of coughing? I have noticed that when my son eats sweet dried fruit it seems to coincide with a lot of dry coughing. Can certain foods trigger coughing?

Coughing is a complex reflex that can be triggered by variety of factors. Some foods can trigger it as well - the consistency of the food, underlying conditions such as reflux and at times sensitivity to chemicals in the foods can be contributing to worsening cough. If you are concerned about food allergies, I would advise seeing an allergist and also addressing the issue with your child's pediatrician.
Does it happen with all the dry foods? Most of the dry foods contain a sulfiting agent as a preservative or to increase the shelf life and may induce coughing especially if an individual suffers from hyperreactive airway disease.
