Pulmonologist Questions Smoking

Can I smoke before a pulmonary functioning test?

I do want a fair test, but I'm a heavy smoker. And if I'm nervous, I need to have a cigarette to calm my nerves. What are the consequences of smoking before a pulmonary functioning test?

No. Smoking immediately prior to the test may affect the results.
The PFTs will look different with smoking. If there is any smoking damage we want to see the background not the acute changes. Other pets look better with smoking than they are. Don’t smoke before PFTs. I encourage you to quit.
