Infectious Disease Specialist Questions Chest Infections

Can my chest infection pass on to my child?

I am currently 5 months pregnant and I have acquired a severe chest infection. The doctors have immediately put me on antibiotics but I am extremely worried if the infection will pass on to my child? Or if the antibiotic use has any risk of harming my child?

Severe respiratory infections in a pregnancy carry significant morbidity complications. The causes are no different from those seen in comparable non-pregnant women, but because of the maternal changes in immune status that accompany the normal pregnant state, these same agents lead to greater complications and poorer baby and maternal outcomes. Therapy for bacterial pneumonia is first determined by the safety profile of available agents and is aimed at covering both typical and atypical pathogens, because the clinical entities are not always distinct. The baby cannot be infected from the mother, the complications are a result of the health of the mother when infected.
Please ensure that the doctor who is treating your infection has answered all your concerns, as they know your specific disease and the antibiotics they are using.
