Neurologist Questions Brain Injury

Can sudden asphyxia cause brain injury in a child?

I am a 34-year-old woman and I just delivered my baby. Due to certain complications in my pregnancy, the baby was deprived of oxygen and has been in the NICU since birth. Could this have caused a brain injury to my baby?

It is possible depending on the degree of hypoxia. Children's brains are very resilient. Please discuss this with the treating doctors.
It depends on the length of lack of oxygen. Hopefully it didn't cause any problems.
Yes it does, the magnitude of such damage is proportionate to the degree and duration of asphyxia, newborns have better odds of recovery than children or adults, a thorough neurological work-up with serial ultrasound would be of value to stay ahead of the curve, especially seizures.
Yes, this is referred to often as Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy or HIE. It can be associated with multi-organ failure, neonatal seizures, and abnormal findings on brain MRI. If there is any concern that something was done wrong during the pregnancy, labor or delivery, recommend getting attorney and medical expert (see website below) to review the case.
