Infectious Disease Specialist (Pediatric) Questions Chicken Pox

What does the chicken pox really look like, and how contagious is it?

I believe my son has the chicken pox, mainly because I see little red spots around his stomach and I know his friend has had it. What does this typically look like? And what precautions should I take to not have it spread throughout my house?

Chicken pox is pink spots with central blisters, typically beginning on the face and head and spreading over the body. It's very contagious, but if everyone in the house has been vaccinated it should be contained. The rash you describe doesn't sound like chickenpox, but it could be modified by prior vaccination.
