“Can frequent episodes of cough in a toddler be a cause of concern?”
My son keeps coughing. Not consistently though, he will cough for a day or so and then be fine. He is currently 3 years old. Is it something that I should be concerned about or is it normal in children?

Might be bronchospasm. Could be improper swallowing. Usually residual cough from a cold. Could be postnasal drip.
Yes - I would schedule an appointment with you healthcare provider. In particular if he has any fevers, wheeze or intermittent shortness of breath. A chronic cough that is more than 3 weeks is not normal and recommend an evaluation.
Cough is one of the most common symptoms of illness in childhood. It can have multiple causes, most commonly from viral respiratory infections. These are often picked up in settings like day cares and schools. Cough from these infections can last for several days before it goes away completely. Concerns with cough are when it persists for weeks, or if it associated with other symptoms like wheezing. If parents are concerned about their child's cough, the first step would be a visit with the Pediatrician and complete tests recommended.
