“Are there different stages in HIV infection?”
I would like to seek information about HIV disease. My close friend was just diagnosed. How does the disease progress in a person? Does treatment actually help or does it just delay the inevitable? I don't want to ask my friend these things.

The disease goes into a latent phase. When enough immune cells are destroyed, the person loses protection against serious infections and some malignancies. This can take months or years. It does not occur at all if the person faithfully takes medication that prevents the virus from multiplying. With treatment, a near-normal lifespan is anticipated.
