Do you need antibiotics for gastroenteritis?

I am a 61 year old female and I was diagnosed with gastroenteritis. Do you need antibiotics for gastroenteritis?

Most GI infections are self limited, so the short answer is no. If there are prolonged symptoms, fever or other complications then antibiotics might be indicated.
For bacterial gastroenteritis they are useful, provided that you know which antibiotics those bacteria are sensitive to.
