Is it common for the elderly to get agitated quickly or does this need medical attention?

My mother is 70 years old and we have been observing changes in her behavior. She gets agitated too quickly and loses her temper. Is this common as one ages, or could she be requiring medical attention?

With elderly two things to keep in mind:

First if they are sick sometimes they have no temperature or other signs but Neibour changes can be noted.

Second any small change in there environment effects them a lot.
Yes, dementia, depressed can cause these symptoms. Also infection like urinary tract infection, new medication can contribute.
I suggest not to give a medication until we know why is she becoming agitated. Is it at a certain part of the day, is it after something that sparked her to behave like that? Sometimes, agitation can be a simple urine infection. ​
