“My food gets stuck in the throat. What could be the reason for this?”
Its been six months and I have been having problems swallowing my food. I feel the food by the time it reaches my throat it gets dry and feels stuck. It normally clears up after I drink water. It also hurts a lot as it goes down my throat. What could be the reason for this?

You could have a narrowing in the esophagus (e.g., a small ring) or an infection causing those symptoms. Esophageal cancer can also do this if you are older or have a history of smoking, alcohol use, or weight loss. You should have an upper endoscopy done by a gastroenterologist.
There can be several reasons for food getting stuck in your esophagus or food pipe. If you have acid reflux, this can happen at times and resolve with drinking water. You may also have another infection like yeast that happens with diabetes. You should consult a gastroenterologist for an upper Endoscopy where one can look inside for further evaluation. In the worst case, sometimes there may be obstruction from inflammation or tumor. So, it is better to see your doctor ASAP.
There are many reasons for trouble swallowing from acid reflux disease complicated by narrowing of esophagus to esophageal motility problem as well as neoplasm of esophagus if associated with weight loss can be considered. Different caustic medications such as Doxycycline and infectious process such as candida and herpes can cause ulcer and painful swallowing more as acute presentation.
The most common cause of intermittent swallowing difficulty is food allergy which is called Eosinophilic Esophagitis diagnosed by endoscopy and biopsy being treated by avoiding six most known culprits such as milk, wheat, nuts. The therapy with inhaler steroids in resistant cases followed by gentle dilatation of esophagus in the case of luminal narrowing is recommended.
