Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) Questions Potassium

What is the treatment for high potassium levels in a kidney patient?

My father has bad kidneys. Recently, it seems that his potassium levels have gone up. How can this be treated?

1. Avoid high potassium-containing foods like tomatoes, bananas, oranges, etc.
2. Avoid constipation.
3. Some meds can cause hyperkalemia.

Your doctor can give meds for high K. Depending on your k level/kidney function, etc., you may need medication to bring down your potassium level. Please check with your doctor.
Just with a low potassium diet.

First, limit potassium rich foods in the diet. But of course, depending what the potassium level is, your Nephrologist can prescribe medications to help bring it down, or even discontinue other medications that may be causing it to rise. Definitely discuss the options with your Nephrologist!
