Gastroenterologist Questions Digestive health

How can I tell if I have a digestive issue?

Like everyone else, I sometimes have stomachaches or cramping, sometimes diarrhea. I've never really thought it was a problem, just that I ate something bad or that my stomach didn't agree with. How can I tell if I have a digestive problem?

When you say that you ate something bad, you probably mean that you got food poisoning. This is extremely common and can lead to irritable bowel syndrome, which would explain the symptoms you describe. IBS can be diagnosed by a doctor and treatment is available.
If it happens often and interferes with your activities of daily living then it requires a discussion and evaluation by a physician.
Get a colonoscopy when you turn 50. If you’re able to eat regular food without pain or diarrhea and have no blood in your bowel movements, nothing to worry about.
