“How difficult is it to get a kidney transplant for kids?”
My son may need a kidney transplant because his kidneys are on the verge of failure. He does get dialysis regularly, but we can't watch him go through it any long. We are considering a kidney transplant. How difficult are they to get?

Depends on many factors. Patient compliance with treatment. Other illnesses. Availability of a donor. All should be discussed with transplant centers near you.
If any family member is there to give the kidney, then he doesn’t have to wait long. If waiting for cadaveric kidney, waiting period depends on factors like how long he is on dialysis, etc. Please check with your dialysis unit and they can better assist you with it.
I’m sorry to hear that, but fortunately kids have priority on the waiting list. Usually in less than a year they got the new kidney. Although if there is a living donor it’s even faster than that.
This is very tough on parents, isn't it!! Hopefully one of the parents can be a donor. Sometimes siblings or other relatives, or other friends can be evaluated and are good donors. Otherwise, he will be on the waiting list for a donor, when someone dies and donates their organs.
Things that affect how long a person is on the waiting list are blood type, age, how long they have been on dialysis, and how well they match with a kidney that becomes available.
The most important thing is to be accepted as a recipient--and be on the national list. I hope that has already occurred, because you can't get a kidney if not on the list!
Good luck and bless you and your family!
