Fluid beyond the eardrum is usually a result of eustachian tube dysfunction. The eustachian tube is the tube that connects your ear to the back of your nose and regulates pressure in the middle ear space (behind the eardrum).
Doctors aim to treat the underlying cause of the dysfunction in order to restore normal middle ear pressure regulation. This can be done through a number of means including: antibiotics, allergy management, adenoidectomy, eustachian tube dilation or surgery, or ear tube placement.
