Nephrologist (Pediatric) Questions Urinary Tract Infections

How do I treat frequent UTIs?

My 14 year old son gets UTIs very frequently--and every time he gets them, I take him to the doctor for antibiotics. But they keep happening... and he's had five from November to now. Why does he keep getting them? And, is there anything that we can do for recurrent UTIs at home?

Boys are not supposed to get frequent UTIs. If he has had 5 episodes over the last 2-3 months, it's best to ask his doctor to investigate his urinary tract if there is any abnormality. Sexually active children are also prone to have UTI symptoms.
Urinary infections in most boys is due to a tight, non-retractile foreskin. This can be cured by circumcision. In any case should see urologist whether he is circumcised or not.
Make sure they are doing a culture and he is on the proper antibiotics. If he has had this many he needs further workup with renal ultrasound and VCUG. He may have reflux of the urine and need surgery. May sure he is drinking plenty of water and urinating frequently at school
