“How do they fix your jaw if it is misaligned?”
My jaw has always been misaligned and I know I'm probably going to need surgery for it. What does jaw surgery for misalignment involve?

First, they need to diagnose exactly WHAT is misaligned. Surgery may involve repositioning of the upper, lower, or both jaws to correct. You will need xrays, a clinical exam, and possibly consultation with an orthodontist along with your surgeon to formulate a plan.
I have treated misaligned jaws for more than 30 years. There are 2 forms of jaw misalignment. 1st and most common is the misalignment of the teeth which is typically treated by an orthodontist. 2nd form of jaw misalignment is due to misalignment of the jaw joints. The jaw joints are referred to as the TMJs or temporomandibular joints. Only a very few dentists are competent in diagnosing and treating misaligned jaw joints. Jaw joint surgery is very uncommon and should only be a last resort.
