Pathologist (Pediatric) Questions Jaundice

How is jaundice in babies diagnosed?

I am about to have my first child and have heard about so many babies born with jaundice. What is the way that doctors diagnose jaundice in babies, and what is the treatment?

Jaundice is diagnosed by a bilirubin blood test. This is usually performed on all babies before discharge or if they look yellow. There was a chart made from research that compares the age of the baby with the level and tells you if it is low risk intermittent or high risk. The babies with high risk should be monitored closely and may need phototherapy.
