“How is naturopathic medicine beneficial for people?”
I am a 36 year old female who is interested in trying naturopathic medicine. I like the idea of a more natural and holistic form of healing. What is beneficial about naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine support the whole body and systems. It is a preventative medicine and a holistic approach to healing. I will say, there is a time and place for traditional western medicine as well, however naturopathic medicine is a great tool to stay healthy or hep get healthy. It is a good option to have a team of providers that know you a your healthy that work cohesively together for your optimal health benefit.
We try to understand the root cause. I spend about 2 hours at the first office visit to get a full picture of your life. The history taking includes current medical history, past medical history, childhood history and mental/emotional history. Following the history taking, I will order any pertinent lab work. This allows me to understand what may be the root cause of your illness.
Hi there!
While this could be a very long answer as there are many, many benefits, I'll list a few key points here and include a link to my article that tells you about what we do in more detail.
First, one of our founding principles is to seek and treat the root cause, aiming to resolve or reverse the condition.
Second, most naturopaths give a ton of time to you! Instead of 10-15 minutes with the doctor you'll get at least 45 minutes, sometimes even up to 2 hours!
Third, we use natural, gentle and least invasive treatment approaches first. While we can prescribe medications, it's a last resort rather than a first resort, or prescribed only when truly needed.
Finally (again you can read more in the article), we don't just treat and care about your body's symptoms. We also look at and care for your mental, emotional and whole-life health situation.

Let me count the ways... First, we identify and treat the cause of your symptoms. We use natural substances that the body recognizes and can metabolize. Quite often, different parts of a plant will work synergistically with each other to bring about more complete healing. Herbal extracts are usually given in either capsular or liquid form. The naturopathic doctor teaches you how your body is unique and what it needs to function optimally. He/she will teach you how to prevent illness, taking into account both your personal and family history. The naturopathic doctor understands physiology and will treat the whole person, not just one part of the body. He/she will likely teach you how one part of your body interacts with another part. Naturopathic doctors take the time to do a thorough history, physical exam, etc to determine what started off your descent in health, and to then draw up a comprehensive treatment plan to resolve your health issues and to prevent new health issues. This type of approach is not possible for medical doctors who are given an average of 7 minutes for each patient visit. I definitely think that naturopathic medicine is a vital part of a complete healthcare system. If you need surgery, go to a surgeon. If you have a life-threatening accident, go to an emergency room as soon as possible. If you want to avoid surgery and the need for other medical interventions, naturopathic medicine would be a good choice. Many of my patients see both me, a naturopathic doctor, and a medical doctor. Best wishes for vibrant health. Sincerely, Dr Joan D Waters
Naturopathic medicine looks at the root causes as opposed to palliating symptoms. We work on removing the obstacles to cure.
Naturopathic Medicine is a holistic approach to healing. In other words, looking at the whole person. We're a specialist practice working with hormones and women's health. Other NDs might work with other things. It's important to find the right fit!

Hi,
Think of Naturopathic medicine as a way of finding the cause and seeing the whole person. I approach each individual in finding a balance to their system. While symptoms may be important, we, Naturopathic Physicians, are always looking for the cause in the symptom picture. It isn't just about using natural remedies or supplements but in finding a lifestyle balance which may also incorporate drugs short-term. It is crucial that when you are laying out your goals what you would like to see in your health. We are simply the means to help you determine the best route possible using as many tools to achieve that balance.

Naturopathic medicine takes a whole person approach to wellness. We strive to find the cause of a disease state so that we can correct that when possible. Our treatment plans are not a one pill fits all approach but are tailored to the individual.
I'm an N.D., but my first school was holistic, conventional medicine. After seeing all the side effects of pharmaceuticals, I chose the natural way.

The tools/modalities/treatments that naturopathic medicine utilizes usually have less side effects. It may take longer to get going especially if you've been on several different types of prescription medications, past or present, and what your over personal history and lifestyle is like. Naturopathic medicine aims to get to the root cause of your ailments, hence why it may take longer to fix. It's like peeling the layers of an onion before getting to the center. Our life has taken us through various routes. It's not going to take 24 hours to get your body in line. it will take time, dedication, and commitment on your part.
