My 12 year old son will have a tooth removed under general anesthesia. How long does it take a child to wake up from anesthesia?

Waking up is shortly after the procedure is done, however, the patient with be under the influence of anesthetic for several hours after.
A patient needs about 20 minutes or so to wake up from anesthesia after the procedure is done, but he/she will be out of it for that day.
That’s a question for the surgeon that put him to sleep. They can use different meds for different levels of sleeping a patient.
Dental conscious sedation as opposed to ‘hospital’ general anesthesia usually allows for patients ‘waking up’ at the end of the procedure or shortly afterward. The office should give you more accurate info. and guidelines.
Usually the patient wakes up very quickly. Once the procedure is done, patients wake up quickly. Your son will be monitored right before, during, and after the procedure. Usually with younger patients, the doctor and staff are aware of both you and your child.
It depends on which drugs they give and the routes that the drugs are given. Usually, drugs are are inhaled wear off faster. IV drugs usually can last longer. Another options, if it is just one extraction, might be a sedative that he can take by mouth. Usually, this is less expensive but still effective for a fast procedure. If they use full GA with inhalation agents, place an IV/breathing tube, etc., I would expect him to wake up within 5-60 minutes. A good anesthesiologist can help the wake up to be faster and more predictable.
