It depends on type of surgery and personal metabolism. My rule is count backwards from 30 backward and 99%of people don’t reach to one so I would say 30 seconds for most people.
Patients can be put to sleep rapidly, over about 10 seconds, or more slowly over a couple of minutes if circumstances warrant. Emergencies, the health of the patient, and whatever is necessary to provide good operating conditions for the surgeon will all play a part in the anesthesiologist’s pace. Be sure to let your anesthesiologist know your desires and fears!
There are conditions that may slow or hasten the onset of anesthesia but in the healthy adult induction of anesthesia usually takes 15-30 seconds once the medication is given through the IV before you are asleep.
The onset of general anesthesia after the injection of a medication used to start your anesthetic such as propofol take about 30 seconds to a minute. Inhaled anesthetic agents through a mask used to start anesthesia in children usually takes 3 to 4 minutes.
Good question. There are several ways in which you can be put to sleep. This process is call “induction”. In your age group (adult), induction takes place via the intravenous (iv) route, meaning that an iv catheter is placed in one of your veins usually by a nurse or a doctor as a first step. Once that is accomplished the process of induction of anesthesia usually happens in less than a minute as the medicines administered take only that long to reach sites in your brain that render you essentially unconscious.
