Orthopaedic Surgeon Questions Carpal Tunnel Surgery

How long does it take for carpal tunnel syndrome to go away?

I am a 33 year old female and my doctor diagnosed me with carpal tunnel. I'm wearing a brace right now to help it. Will this ever go away?

If you pay attention to the cause, it may resolve. For example, changing the position of your desk or keyboard if you spend a lot of time typing on the computer. Many patients will require a simple surgical procedure to cut a ligament that will relieve the pressure on the nerve.
It could go away in some cases but that is unfortunately not the likelihood. If it does, it would likely recur at some point in your life and eventually need further treatment. However, it is relatively unusual for a 33-year-old to have carpal tunnel syndrome. I would suggest a confirmatory test such as an EMG if it has not been done already.

It is important to always seek a medical evaluation by a licensed professional to ensure it is not the manifestation of something more serious. You also want to seek help sooner rather than later to prevent any further damage to the area.
One way or another your symptoms should go away. It really depends upon the severity of your carpal tunnel syndrome. Milder cases can resolve with time, splinting and sometimes cortisone injections. In certain cases, although not all, if symptoms persist, surgery is indicated.
