It depends on the type of local anesthesia the surgeon or anesthesiologist used. Lidocaine, which is used for a bier block for hand surgeries, will usually last about an hour. If you have ropivacaine injected for a nerve block, it can last anywhere from 12 to 24 hours depending on how fast you metabolize the medicine.
