Dentist Questions Dental Implants

How painful is a dental implant?

I'm 30 and I want to get a dental implant soon, but I'm really afraid. How painful are dental implants?

Not painful
Hi,

When an implant is placed, you will have adequate local anesthesia. You should be fine. Afterwards, the dentist will give you appropriate painkillers.
Good luck.
The short answer is it is not very painful. I have had a patient get as many as 10 implants in one appointment and tell me the day after post-op that all he took was 600mg of motrin that night. Most patients report less pain from implant placement than from an extraction. Patients often anticipate great pain. That is not correct. However, the anxiety can be a force behind this. In cases like this, it is often best to be sedated for implant placement. You wake up and it's over.
Unfortunately, this is a difficult question to answer because there is such a wide range of experience with pain. Some feel nothing while others are uncomfortable for two weeks. Most commonly patients take pain medicine for two days and then don’t need it. It's worth it. Try not to worry.
Dental implants are a very common procedure. Many are done just under local anesthetic. Like many things it is the idea of the procedure that is worse than the procedure itself. Of course, you will be sore, but the discomfort is usually minimal.
