Pain is subjective and the pain depends on the cause and the severity of the inflammation.

The answer is it depends on the location of the pain. The most common cause is over the outside of the hip called trochanteric bursitis. It can be very painful with direct pressure. There are a number of other tendons located deeper around the hip which can have bursitis. Ice, heat, and over-the-counter anti-inflammatories should help significantly.
