What should I do to treat my enlarged prostrate?

I have an enlarged prostrate and I just got referred to a specialist. Is surgery usually required for this?

No. There are many options, from 3 categories of medications, to several minimally invasive office treatments to surgery. Surgery is rarely the first option. Make sure you discuss all your options with your urologist.
There are many options other than surgery. Sometimes medication is effective. Sometimes minimally invasive treatments such as TUMT or Urolift are needed.
First off, it is a prostate. There are multiple different things which include medicine, minimally invasive procedures, and surgery, which is reserved for those who fail those first few. Seeing a specialist who specializes in BPH is a great start.

Enlargement of prostate is a normal process. Do you have any symptoms? History and examination is important and the urologist will be able to explain what further workup is needed for final diagnosis.
