Pediatric Oncologist Questions Immune System and Disorders

Why is my son's immunity so low even after recovering from cancer?

My son is 9 years old and is a cancer survivor! We are very fortunate. However, his immunity is very low. Even a small cold and cough seems serious in his case. We have been keeping up with his checkups and everything is fine. What could be wrong?

So glad to hear your son is a cancer survivor! Chemotherapy basically cleans out the immune system, and just like a newborn, it takes some time for his immunity to build back up. In fact, getting colds are helping him build his immunity back up. His doctors are following his immunity. If he starts getting very serious infections like pneumonias more frequently, then he may need more testing to figure out what is going on. I wish him continued health and success.
