Dental fillings are not painful and a lot of times, you do not need the anesthetic. If it is not a deep filling, we make a decision clinically after taking the X-ray.
Today dental fillings should NOT be painful. If the cavity is deep and close to dental nerve, it should be numbed up with a local anesthetic. This is routine dental procedure that is very well accepted. Your tooth and adjacent areas are going to be without sensitivity for about three hours. No pain is associated with this procedure. You should drink lots of water after the filling as the local anesthesia is eliminated through your bladder. This will speed-up that elimination.
