Post op pain varies.
Hernia surgery done laproscopicly is not really painful. You can do light work and drive a car in 48 hours.

Post-operative pain depends on so many factors and is hard to tell you how much pain you will have. It should have been discussed by your surgeon what is typically expected with type of procedure you will be having since there are several different techniques for inguinal hernia repair. I usually tell my patients, the first few of days will be uncomfortable and recommend narcotic type of pain medications to get through it. In most cases, patient will be mobile and able to tolerate getting around by the first week and by the second week, will be nearly recovered.
Hernia surgery is always painful. They are done under anesthesia. Local anesthetic is injected at the sites of operation after surgery is finished. Pain medication are always prescribed. Pain usually lasts 10 days to 2 weeks. Laparoscopic hernia surgery is much less painful for recovery than a regular open surgery done with major cuts and incisions. Lifting should be avoided for 1 month to minimize pain as well as keep the hernia repair solidly healed for 1 month.
Sure it hurts. But it should be no big deal. Be sure to have a surgeon familiar with issues like mesh related neuropathy perform your operation.
It is generally a well tolerated operation, especially if done laparoscopically. Patients receive pain medication while in the hospital. I typically prescribe 20 tabs (5 days worth) of pain medication after discharge, and most people seem not to even need to take that much.
