Dentist Questions Teeth Whitening

Is teeth whitening safe for your mouth?

I have smoked and drank coffee for years, and my teeth are terribly stained. I'd like to whiten teeth. How safe is this to do?

Teeth whitening done by a professional dentist is very safe. It can help very much with coffee stains and cigarette stains. The important thing is the health of the gums. If you have gum disease, I don't recommend getting whitening before treating the gums.
As long as your using a reputable whitening system it is safe to whiten your teeth. The best system is the one your dentist can provide. It will get you the best results. The only side effect is some people will experience sensitivity for 23-48 hours after but then it should go back to normal.
If done gradually there is no contraindication to teeth whitening. Unfortunately you may not be a good candidate for whitening and you may be dissatisfied with the result. Get a dental evaluation to best get the desired result.
You need to have your teeth professionally cleaned before bleaching as the bleaching technique will not remove stains or tartar. The procedure may create some sensitivity for a period of time, but it is usually temporary. Overall, the procedure is very safe, results may vary.
Make sure your teeth & the supporting tissue is healthy & you don’t have any active lesions before whitening your teeth. You shouldn’t have any problems!
