Is ultrasonic scaling painful?

I am a 22 year old female. I will have a dental cleaning next week. Is ultrasonic scaling painful?

About one in a hundred people cannot tolerate ultrasonic cleaning without an anaesthetic shot. Your dental health care provider may try cleaning one small area as a test and then discuss with you if you need or want numbing.
If done properly it should not be, however, it depends on the status of your gums and teeth at the time of the procedure as well.

Any type of scaling, ultrasonic or hand, can be painful when inflammation is present. Ask about topical anesthetic if you are uncomfortable.
A dental cleaning or prophylaxis should not be a painful visit. The gum tissue can be sensitive, especially if it is inflamed. This is often the case if the patient has not had their teeth cleaned in a long time. In any case, let your hygienist or dentist know if you feel uncomfortable so they can provide some relief.

No it is not, unless you have a little bit of recession. If that is the case you can ask the hygienist to give you a little topical around those areas.
Ultrasonic scaling is not normally painful. If you haven't had your teeth cleaned in a while you may have root recession from all the plaque and calculus deposits present. This may cause you to be more sensitive during scaling. If you do feel uncomfortable during the appointment, you can ask the hygienist to use hand scaling instead. Another option may be to get some anesthetic first so that you don't feel anything.
No, ultrasonic cleaning is not painful. Sometimes if the gums are receded and roots are exposed, then it can be sensitive.
No.
Some people are hyper sensitive, but sometimes it's easier than regular scaling.
Hello,

Glad to hear you are taking care of your oral hygiene. An ordinary routine dental cleaning with an ultrasonic scaler is not usually painful at all. You can have an area or two that may be a little sensitive, but it should not be painful. However, if you are having a "deep cleaning" (what we call "scaling") and we suspect it can be painful anesthesia will be given in those areas. This is usually because the gums are swollen and sensitive.
Hope this helps.

My best to you!
