Plastic Surgeon Questions Acne scars

Does laser treatment work for correcting acne scars?

I have tried many ointments and medications to get rid of my acne scars but none work. Is there a laser treatment available for this? Does it hurt? I have scarring on my face and shoulders.

Hello, there are multiple treatments via laser, IPL, Morpheus, PRP and even creams to diminish acne scars. They are all custom tailored to the particular patient. You may also visit my website at DrRoya.com for further information.
Dear patient,

Laser therapy is a very good solution for acne scars. If the scars are not too deep, you should see improvement after already 2 or 3 treatments. Another treatment that helps is a chemical peeling.
Absolutely. Resurfacing lasers (CO2) and RF sublative technology have the capacity to improve the pock marks and give an overall healthier appearance.
If your scars are red and/or thick, certain laser treatments could help to flatten and lighten them. If the scars are older and depressed, “icepick” scars, laser would not be indicated. The second type of scaris better treated by directly excising it and closing each spot with a couple of stitches.
Not all lasers are the same. Specific laser-like profractional laser is good for acne. Usually, you get better results with combined treatments.

Thanks.
Hello and thank you for your question. In short, absolutely. Laser is a very powerful tool for the treatment of as variety of acne scars and should be part of the armamentarium of any doctor treating acne scars. Depending on the type of acne scars, type and tone of skin, age of the scars, and other health factors laser alone or in combination with other modalities can be very effective.
A CO2 laser will help, but results are not permanent; it can take 3-4 weeks before the redness fades and then you will be pink for a couple of months. I perform it under general anesthesia, so I can go deeper and have it not hurt. It does not hurt much once the session is over.
Yes, you can obtain almost 70% to 80% improvement with the use of fat transfer mixed with PRP or ACELL into the scarred areas with needle subscion followed by CO2 laser treatment. Or, you can follow with a series of icon laser treatments; the 1540 every 6 weeks X3 treatments all work well.

Thank you,

Fractional laser resurfacing often works well for scars, including acne scars. Most people require a series of treatments. The number of treatments will vary from person to person. Fractional laser tends to feel similar to laser hair removal. Many people do not think that it hurts; others have some discomfort.
Dear patient,

A laser is simply an instrument that produces a very coherent, focused beam of light, that can be used to burn organic material such as human tissue.

The operative word here is "burn." There is no real magic to a laser, although the advertising hype would make one think otherwise. So, if you take one scar, such as an acne scar, and replace it with another caused by a burn, you will still have a scar. Maybe even a worse one.

Laser treatments can be tailored to help burn away unwanted pigmented birthmarks and excess blood vessels in others and the burn effect can tighten loose, wrinkled skin if used correctly. Burning out blood vessels in very active scars can sometimes help the scar to resolve and soften more quickly than by relying on time alone, but results are very variable.

Specifically for acne, lasers can be used to equalize uneven areas of scarring, but usually at the expense of bleaching the involved skin. It is a calculated trade-off.

You need to find a doctor very experienced in laser surgery who will use very good judgement in his/her recommendations before having your scars treated. You may do very well, but please choose carefully and ask pointed questions. Expect honest answers. Board certification of your surgeon is imperative.

Hello,

Yes!!! There is a fractionated CO2 laser. I have in my practice one from Lumenis callen acupulse. Depending on the depth of the scarring, your soles need from two to three treatments with a three-month interval.
Hi,

Thank you for your inquiry.

We do have a laser that helps correct textural concerns (acne scarring). The number of treatments needed will depend on the severity of the acne scars. There is minimal discomfort during the treatment.
