Family Practitioner Questions Vitamin D

Could my constipation be due to vitamin D supplements?

I have recently started taking vitamin D supplements for my Gout pain. From the time I started this medication, I have noticed my bowels have been erratic. I am suddenly having a lot of constipation. Could it be due to the vitamin D supplements?

It could be due to vitamin D supplements. Vitamin D causes increased amounts of calcium, which then might lead to constipation subsequently. Were you deficient before as seen from labs? If not, Vitamin D isn't necessary. Make sure to drink plenty of water and eat a lot of fiber rich, plant-based foods.
Not if taken correctly. Vitamin D gel caps with a good oil like olive and avocado should not cause constipation most like pain medicine. Try this link:

That's quite possible. Vitamin D promotes increased calcium absorption. Increased calcium causes your bowels to contract more frequently and more strongly--> constipation.
High levels of calcium in the blood can cause constipation. So, the answer to her question is yes, vitamin D can cause constipation. However, taking the supplement at the recommended dose should not cause any problems. You can take up to 1000 IU of vitamin D3 a day without any side effects.

It is probably the medicine causing the constipation.
Yes, vitamin d could contribute to constipation. However there are a number of other medical concerns that could cause constipation as well. It is best to see your doctor for a complete assessment.
