Occupational Medicine Questions Occupational Therapy

When should my mom start occupational therapy?

My mom had a stroke a week ago, and is still recovering. She's in physical therapy right now to help get her strength back for walking, but I think she needs to also be in occupational therapy. Do you think she should be doing this as well?

Hi. Yes, occupational therapy should usually be started as soon as possible since it assesses and helps with multiple areas of functional living, alongside upper body range of motion, strength, and coordination. You can ask her physician to write an order for her to start Occupational therapy.
OT can be particularly helpful in the early phase after a stroke! I encourage you to request this intervention and referral from your physician. Seek out an OT with specialty experience in stroke and neurological conditions.
