Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) Questions Kidney Diseases

Would you recommend natural medicine for a kidney disease patient?

My father has been diagnosed with kidney disease and is apprehensive about lots of medical treatment. Is there any harm in starting natural medicine for him? He is 70 years old. Would you recommend it?

Controlling progression of ckd is best left to a nephrologist as medications and supplements can do further harm. Best to let a doc advise him on nephrotoxic medicatiions and help him improve his kidney function. The only other thing that naturally helps is to drink plenty of water, and to keep diabetes and high blood pressure controlled.
Truthfully these natural medications don't help much. What is his kidney function like? Some herbal medications can be toxic too.
Make sure he sees a specialist
I do not recommend natural medicines. Some can even harm the kidneys.

Thanks.
No
No, it does not help.
Yes you should visit a natural pathology to apply herbal medicine to treat kidney disease
The problem with "natural medicine" is that it is unregulated, untested and we have no idea what it does. I'm not sure what treatments have been recommended for him but they will all have been evaluated for the efficacy and tested extensively. Yes "ordinary" medicines can have side effects but his doctor should be able to explain any of these to him. Of course it entirely depends on what his kidney disease is and what treatments he needs. But just because something is "natural" does not mean it's safe or of benefit.
