“Can an ophthalmologist perform cataract surgery?”
My mother, who is 70 years old, is suffering from cataracts in her left eye. Do we need to reach out to an ophthalmologist for cataract surgery?

Ophthalmologists do perform cataract surgery. I'm surprised she has not been seen sooner by an ophthalmologist. But if she is having problems with her vision and has never had eye surgery, then it is important for her to have an evaluation. It could also be a number of other things. Before a discussion about cataract surgery, other causes of decreased vision need to be ruled out.
Yes you should find a qualified ophthalmologist that performs cataract surgery. When choosing a cataract surgeon, I would also ask if they use Laser cataract surgery, Toric lenses and or lenses that help to reduce the need for glasses both for distance and near. Not all surgeons are the same, and many do not offer their patients the best options for reducing their spectacle dependence if that is important
Yes, an ophthalmologist is a physician who performs cataract surgery. A comprehensive eye examination is first performed to insure that the cause of vision decline is the cataract. There are many sub specialists within ophthalmology who focus on other areas of the eye.
Ophthalmologists are the usual ones to perform cataract removal. Optometrists cannot and do not have the training for surgery on the eye If your mother is seeing an ophthalmologist then she is likely in good hands. This is a highly successful procedure with generally excellent results.
Yes...absolutely. A board certified ophthalmologist MD is the only specialist qualified to perform cataract surgery.
Only ophthalmologists who are licensed MD's and have completed a residency in ophthalmology perform cataract surgery. No other physicians perform cataract surgery.
Only an ophthalmologist can do cataract surgery. I would look for one with a lot of experience and good reviews
An ophthalmologist is the only type of specialist to perform cataract surgery as a medical doctor and surgeon specially trained in cataract and other ocular surgeries and treatments. An ophthalmologist will do a complete assessment of both eyes, explain the status, and help you understand the needed procedure. It is truly a wonderful specialty to restore vision.
