“Pain after wisdom tooth removal?”
After my extraction, I've been experiencing a dull, achy pain for the past two days. I haven't been taking the ibuprofen my dentist prescribed because I thought I didn't need them. He also prescribed me Vicodin, but I don't want to take that because I'm scared of becoming dependent on them. Will this pain pass eventually?

It is very possible that you have post extraction alveolar osteitis, better known as dry socket. Contact your dentist. The treatment is easy and should take care of your problem simply.

This pain typically increases on days 2 and 3 following the extractions an will then taper off over the next 7-10 days.
The pain will pass eventually. Taking ibuprofen will help with control of pain and relief of inflammation. It is extremely important to keep the surgical sites clean and free of debris. Collection of food will lead to increased inflammation and possibly an infection.
Thank you for asking this question, and yes it will pass. How long that takes depends upon a number of factors: upper or lower tooth, front tooth or molar tooth, difficulty of extraction, etc. I would recommend the ibuprofen as it would ease your discomfort and after two days it is unlikely you would even need the Vicodin. If your pain intensifies over the next 1-3 days, it could be a sign of dry socket (although it doesn't sound like it right now) and you should return to the doctor that did the extraction for dry socket treatment. Hope this helps!
Typical pain should pass in 48-72 hours. You may have debris lodged inside the socket (where the wisdom tooth was) or you may be developing a dry socket (inflamation of the bone inside the socket). Best to return to the surgeon for an evaluation.
Hi,
Pain after surgery is normal. The path to healing includes inflammation, swelling and pain. If the surgery wa straightforward without any complications, things will usually heal and pain usually subside. This may take up to 1-2 weeks. Pain meds are for your comfort.

It is very normal to have discomfort for several days after a extraction. After all you had surgery. A good combination for pain relief is to alternate 800mg of ibuprofen with two tylenol. Depending on the amount of discomfort and the number of days after the extraction it is possible to have a "dry socket" if you did not get a good blood clot. It is best to check with your dentist who did the extraction.
