“I have a pain in my neck every morning. Can you tell me what could it be?”
Every morning I wake up with a pain in my neck right where the spine starts. What could this pain be and how can I get rid of it?

If you are waking with pain in your neck, the answer could be as simple as the pillow you are sleeping on. If you are a side sleeper, ensure you are maintaining a neutral position while on your side. If back sleeper, ensure you are not on too fluffy of a pillow causing your neck to be elevated. If it is resulting in a headache, it could be a combination of pillow and a restriction in the occiput. Please see a chiropractor to explore these options.
It could be caused from your pillow. I would recommend consulting with a chiropractor and explaining your symptoms.
Could be your mattress or your pillow. Try a different bed and pillow for 4 nights and see if it changes.
There are many causes of neck pain but since you wake with it, it may be the pillow you are using or the position in which you are sleeping.
Poor sleeping posture, you need to discuss your sleeping posture with your doctor. Most people need a C shape or U shape full body pillow to cradle them while sleeping to avoid poor sleeping posture when they are resting in bed.
There are many reasons why your neck would be hurting. An evaluation should be performed to determine what the problem is. and the proper treatment protocol can be recommend.

You possibly could have slept the wrong way. On average we turn in bed up to 8 times per night. You may have strained your neck, and you may have a condition called “Wry neck”. Stress, tension and trauma could also be caused as well. I recommend a chiropractic assessment as the cervical vertebrae may be out of alignment pinching the nerve. Correction is a chiropractic adjustment.
This may be from your pillow. It is important to have the right pillow for the position you sleep in (back, side, etc)
Most likely your pain is from your neck being in one position for too long. Try using different pillows and try a neck roll under your neck when you first go to bed.
Thank you for your question.
Pain in the neck first thing in the morning is often a result of joints and muscles in your neck and upper back not functioning properly as well as an improper sleep position (too much or too little of a pillow). First, check that your neck is straight when you are sleeping on your side or has a small curve in it if you are on your back. (If you sleep on your stomach, this can be the cause of your neck pain) Second, adjust your pillows and sleep position to find the best position for your neck.
If the problem is not coming from your sleep habits but instead from improper moving joints and muscles, seeing your chiropractor is advised. They can provide an examination to find the cause of the problem and provide treatments that help.

Start with spinal adjustments to realign the spine and purchase a good cervical support pillow that will support the proper curvature of the neck.
The cause of pain in the neck could be multi-factorial, I would check your pillow, the way you sleep, the bed along with what you are doing prior to bed etc...
Then, I would also look at the vertebra in your neck along with the shoulder and low back since their connections could impact the neck pain.
So, a proper chiropractic examination along with an ergonomic assessment would be indicated for a long-term solution.

IT COULD BE A NUMBER OF THINGS. IT COULD BE THE WAY THAT YOU ARE SLEEPING DURING THE NIGHT, IT COULD BE THAT YOU NEED A NEW OR DIFFERENT TYPE OF PILLOW. YOU MAY HAVE A MISALIGNMENT OF THE SPINE IN YOUR UPPER CERVICAL ARE THAT COULD BE THE CAUSE OF THE PAIN. CONSULT WITH YOUR LOCAL CHIROPRACTOR FOR A CONSULT.
If you have tried stretching, then try changing out your pillow. The next step would be to see a chiropractor for an X-ray and evaluation.
Usually, pain in the mornings worst case could be some sort of disc involvement but also depends on the type of pain you are experiencing (burning, numbness/tingling, radiating, shooting, etc.). IMO it does not mean there is a herniated disc, but the muscles could be guarding (tighten around the area) to protect from more damage/pain.
It also could be simply from the way you are sleeping and the type of pillow you use. There is really no way of telling without having an assessment done. Go see a therapist (PT/Chiro/Massage) and, if need be, your primary.

Could be as simple as a bad pillow, considering it’s in the morning your neck hurts consistently. If it’s every morning, the cause is happening from what you are doing prior, which is sleeping. If a new pillow doesn’t fix the problem, consult a Chiropractor for eval. Hope I helped. Got your back! Dr Todd Gewant
