Anesthesiologist Questions Anesthesia

I had a root canal treatment and my inner cheek is swollen. Is it normal?

I had a root canal treatment about 3 hours ago. The doctor gave me 3 anesthesia injections. My inside cheek still feels very numb and is swollen. Is it a normal reaction? For how long will it last?

That's normal. Depending on the anesthetic used, it can last up to 8-10 hours.
Complications of nerve blocks can occur. They are pretty uncommon and if they occur, should go away in a few months. If not, there is nothing that can really be done. It is rare for nerve injury to persist for more than a few months
Numbness and swelling are common after undergoing root canal surgery and it persists for days before gradually diminishing. Excessive pain, swelling or bleeding should warrant your returning to see the dentist or orthodontist who performed your surgery.
Yes, the numbness is from the injection and the swelling is more likely due to the surgery
Very normal. The local anesthetic adds some volume to the tissue. Also, the circulation to the area can be reduced temporarily. Depending on the type of local anesthetic used, it may be anywhere from 2-4 hours or even longer. It may take 10-12 hours for it to feel near 'normal' again. It is important to remember to be very careful with your numb cheek, teeth, and or gums. You don't want to chew on that side, and avoid hot or cold beverages or you might accidentally bite or burn that surface.
Depending on the medication he gave and where injected yes it is still possible that the area will feel numb and swollen. Adding an ice pack to reduce swelling may help. If the area is not improving within another 1-2 hours you should notify the oral surgeon or dentist so that they can re-evaluate the situation.
Yes, this is normal from the numbing medicine. It will wear off in a few hours.
