Orthopaedic Surgeon Questions Knee Surgery

How soon will I be able to run again after a knee replacement surgery?

I had knee surgery 10 days ago and I still have trouble walking. Before the surgery, I would run everyday and now I feel like I won't be able to do the same for a very long time. How long will it take to fully recover?

It's not recommended to run after knee replacement, but you can try --about 3 months.
With me less than 3 months
Typically we don’t like patients to run after a knee replacement because it can make the new joint wear out faster than it normally would. In general I tell my patients it can take up to a year to fully recover from knee replacement surgery.
Very few people run regularly after knee replacement surgery.Bicycle is much more reasonable if you want your knee prosthesis to “ survive” long term.
Recreational running is not recommended after new replacement. Surgeon will typically tell this to patients before that surgery. This is assuming you had a full knee replacement. If your conditioned allowed for a partial knee replacement, it may be possible to run 3 to 6 months post surgery.
I generally advise my patients against running after a total knee replacement. The prostheses are designed for the impact of walking. The metal surfaces that are bonded to your bone do not have any cushion or resilience that cartilage has in a normal knee. It can take up to 3 months to restore a normal walking pattern after knee replacement surgery
It is not unusual to expect three to six months time before a return to full pre-surgery activities. It also depends on the individual and how realistic expectations are.
6-12 weeks. But, some doctors do not want their patients to run after TKA.
It took me 4 months before I could run but I was able to walk fast after 2 months and I was able to run may be 4 more weeks before I could more than 5 or six steps. I didn't have pain but fatigue. I wasn't after to run prior to surgery for may be 6 months so maybe I didn't get started early because of that.
You should be able to jog at 3 months with gradual progression to running, it takes 6 months to get to 85%, and a full year to fully recover.  I discourage my replacement patients from running for exercise as it will wear out your knee faster.  I encourage patients to be active but try to do low impact activities including swimming, biking, elliptical, and walking.
I recommend that a patient avoid running and any other high impact exercise forever after knee replacement. Cycling and swimming are much better exercises after a lower extremity joint replacement.
