Pathologist Questions Pus boil

How is a sample collected for a pus culture?

I have an infected boil that needs to undergo a pus culture. How will they collect the sample?

The sample is collected with a syringe and small needle. Sent to the laboratory for culture. Thank you.
If large, local anesthesia (numbing by injection) is usually provided around the abscess. Using a blade the pus and pocket are opened and swab is taken of the pus. The entire contents of the abscess is expressed and often antibiotics are given after to improve the chances of a cure. Prevention of reinfection is by decolonization.
A sample of the purulent material (pus) is sampled by a sterile swab and submitted into a sterile tube or culture collecting medium.
The lesion needs to be opened & a sterile cotton tipped swab is used to collect some of the pus.
