Yes. Every child should get the flu vaccine. As pediatricians, we highly recommend that children receive all of their vaccines.
Influenza is usually a mild illness in otherwise healthy children and adults. However, thousands of children worldwide become extremely sick and/or die from influenza every season. The influenza shot is the best additional protection to provide for your child, in addition to normal hand washing and avoiding individuals who are ill. Even if you cannot afford to have your child out of school for a few days, the influenza shot is the best way to protect him/her. There is no down-side to the influenza shot.
