Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Questions Dental Health

What are the steps involved in maintaining good oral hygiene?

I brush my teeth twice a day, floss once, and gargle my mouth well every time I finish eating my food. What else should I do to maintain good oral hygiene? Teeth and gum issues run in my family, especially the need for root canals, so I want to prevent as much as I can. I am 25.

Sounds like you are doing a great job! You should see a general dentist once a year at your age for professional cleaning and X-rays to rule out any other issues.
It's best to make sure there is fluoride in the water, and if not, get supplemental fluoride tablets from your dentist. If you are not sure, have your water checked. Too much fluoride is as bad as none at all
