Orthodontist Questions Dental Braces

After removing my braces, my cheeks have swollen up. What could be the reason?

I recently underwent a treatment to get my braces removed. However, as a result my cheeks have swollen up. What could be the reason for this? Please advice.

The main reasons for swollen cheeks are usually infection or allergy. Both would be exceedingly rare following braces removal. Perhaps having the mouth open for a longer procedure triggered some minor muscle swelling. Usually if that happens, it resolves on its own. I would suggest that you call the doctor for a follow up if this does not resolve. If it should get worse or lead to any other symptoms I would suggest you get seen sooner to rule out any infections or allergies.
I hope this helps!
I have never heard of this reaction. I have removed braces from thousand of patients without ever being told of this reaction. You should discuss the specifics of what was done and what material were used with your orthodontist.
A lot of this may depend on what part of your cheeks are swollen (inside or outside) and how long ago is "recently". If you had this reaction the same day you got your braces off, it's possible you may be slightly allergic to some of the materials that are commonly used in dentistry (could be the powder from the glue, or your retainer, etc). If the outside of your cheeks are swollen you could be allergic to something in the gloves, or it's possible something you wiped your face with after. It's pretty common also for your cheeks to feel swollen when they are not because of all the extra space you now have without the brackets. The best thing to do is keep everything really clean (include your cheeks when you brush) and don't introduce any new stimuli (like foods that could generate an allergic reaction). If it doesn't start to go away in 10 days, or if you notice the symptoms getting worse contact your dental professional or physician right away
This is atypical. Please consult your orthodontist and/or physician.
I would highly recommend that you return to your orthodontist to have them evaluate this.
This is very unusual. There are many factors that could contribute to this, so I would consult with your orthodontist as soon as possible. It is possible you may have had an allergic reaction to materials used that day like the latex gloves or impression materials.
Hello. You may have an allergy to the latex gloves that were used during the removal appointment.

I would follow up with your orthodontist to if there is any chance you may have an allergy to your retainers. Although it's unlikely if you did not have a reaction to the braces, it's always better to check with an doctor in person to have it evaluated. Hope this helps...Dr.B.
I need more information about your case to answer this question properly. Such as, how long was your treatment? Did you have any trauma? Ulcers? How is your dental hygiene?
This could be any of a number of things! The best thing to do is go back to the orthodontist so he can see what it is that might be causing the swelling, and treat it accordingly.
Having swollen cheeks would be hard to evaluate by email. It is not a usual outcome of removing braces, so I would check with your orthodontist to be seen ASAP to make sure there is no sign of infection from or allergy to any of the materials used.

There could be multiple reasons and therefore I would suggest visiting your dentist if the swelling does not improve in a few days.
This is very unusual. Is the swelling on both sides or only on one side?
