Ophthalmologist Questions Eye care

My son plays a lot of video games. I'm concerned for his eyes--should I be?

My son plays a lot of video games on his computer in close proximity to his screen. Is this really as bad for his eyes as it seems?

This may be a sign he is near sighted or is going to become near sighted and need glasses. You should take him in for an eye exam and encourage him to play outdoors as well to get some sunlight which can limit near sightedness.

Playing video games will not cause any negative effects on your friends eyes
It could be bad. It causes eye strain, induces myopic progression and dry eyes. Take breaks every now and then to rest the eyes
There is some research that it is not necessarily good. It causes accommodation and it is linked to nearsightedness in people using their eyes for near tasks at all times. Kids should be running outdoors and playing not constantly reading books or being inside on video games. This allows the eyes to develop for distance normally.

Also the Blue light content has not been well studied but is somewhat alarming. These wavelengths of light may not be healthy for the lens and the macula.
Hi. Prolonged near work can cause increased myopia and reduced blinking rate with secondary dry eye.
