What age should a child see a speech pathologist if not talking?

My son is 2 years old and he only mumbles some words. What age should a child see a speech pathologist if not talking?

If he is near 3 he should get an evaluation. If he has just turned 2, you could wait a few months to see if he starts saying some intelligent words. Good luck
Speech-language pathologists work with children as young as 15 months to support speech, language, and communication development. You should find a pediatric speech-language pathologist near you.

He should have about 50 words. I would have him evaluated by a speech pathologist
A child who is not saying several (20-50) words by age two, whether or not clear words, should raise some concerns. The first questions is, can the child hear? If there is any question, obtain a hearing screen through a qualified audiologist who is well trained in checking hearing in small children. If the hearing is normal, then a speech therapy evaluation is necessary to determine the degree of delay. In most kids, the speech delay will clear up on its own, but in some cases, therapy can be very helpful. Please consult your pediatrician on this one.

It would benefit your child to get an evaluation from a speech language pathologist at this age. By age 2, I'd expect more than just, in your words "some words." Early intervention is a great way to expand his language! And reading to him just 20 minutes a day exposes him to a million words in a year!
Hello,

You should seek out a speech evaluation if you have concerns. Typically, at two years old, a child should be putting two words together in a variety of situations such as “hi mommy,” “go ball,” or “up, please.”
