What are lentigines?

I'm 40, and I just started developing some dark, blotchy spots on my shoulder. My doctor said it might be lentigines. What are these?

Lentigines refer to freckles.
These are signs of sun damage or sun freckles. Unlike normal ephilides or freckles solar lentigines tend to stay year round

These are also known as sun spots. Generally, they occur after many years of sun exposure and sunburns.
