Sports Medicine Specialist Questions shin splints

What are shin splints?

I run a lot, and now I'm experiencing sharp pain in my shins. Could this be shin splints? If it is, what's treatment for them?

Shin splints are anterior lower leg pain initially caused by tight muscles pulling on the bone. Proper shoe wear, orthotics, calf and lower leg stretching and strengthening, and overall bone health with vitamin D and calcium all are used to treat. If the pain remains as an ache after the run, they indeed can be shin splints.
Usually tendonitis of some of the calf muscles, but there are other more serious causes. Usually treated with rest, rehab, and gradual return to sport.
Muscles are pulling in their attachments to the bone, need to slow down a bit and see if it abates.
